Labour Party declares independence, shelving coalition plans ahead of 2027 elections.
At a media briefing in Abuja, Labour Party (LP) National Chairman Julius Abure announced that the party will not enter any coalition for the 2027 elections. The decision follows a National Executive Council meeting reinforced by legal backing from a Supreme Court ruling .
Abure stressed the party’s ideological distinction and commitment to its principles, citing that the 2023 coalition was more impactful than any merger could be. The NEC also dismissed a rival faction’s recent Transcorp meeting, deeming it illegal and unconstitutional .
Datti Baba-Ahmed, LP’s 2023 vice-presidential running mate, was present, signalling internal unity and focus on consolidation over alliances. The party plans to "rebuild, reconcile, and consolidate gains" from its recent electoral performance .
Analysts suggest this stance could fragment opposition forces, leaving APC and ADC/NNPP blocs to contest independently. However, Labour insiders hope for clarity in messaging and policy as they gear up for grassroots campaigns.
