Kenyan high court deems abduction of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu unlawful.
On June 27, 2025, the Kenyan High Court ruled that the 2021 rendition of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu was illegal and unconstitutional. Justice E.C. Mwita found Kenyan authorities complicit in violating national rights laws by forcibly detaining and transferring Kanu to Nigeria.
The judgment also criticized the involvement of INTERPOL, stressing the need to uphold due process and individual freedoms. Kanu was reportedly denied legal counsel, medical care, and a timely court hearing during his detention.
This ruling may shift diplomatic dynamics between Kenya and Nigeria, with international human rights groups calling for reparations and new safeguards for political dissidents.
