Odisha Teen Death: Police Contradict Initial Reports, Citing "No Other Person" Involved
The death of a 15-year-old girl in Odisha, who suffered severe burn injuries, has taken a new turn as police have issued a statement contradicting initial reports and a complaint filed by her family.
The girl, a resident of Puri district, was initially admitted to AIIMS in Bhubaneswar on July 19 with 75% burns. According to a First Information Report (FIR) filed by her mother, the girl had alleged that three men on a bike had set her on fire. She was later airlifted to AIIMS, New Delhi, where she passed away on Saturday.
In a significant development, the Odisha Police have now stated that their investigation suggests "no other person is involved" in the incident. This statement was shared by the Odisha Police on their official X (formerly Twitter) account and has been widely reported. The police have not yet provided a clear explanation of how the fire started.
Adding to the complexity, the girl's father released a video message claiming his daughter took her own life due to "mental stress and depression." He appealed to political parties to refrain from politicizing the tragic event. This statement supports the police's current conclusion and stands in direct contrast to the initial FIR, which alleged abduction and arson.
The case has drawn political scrutiny, with opposition parties criticizing the police's findings and questioning the thoroughness of the investigation, especially in light of the initial FIR and a reported witness account. In response, the police have urged the public to exercise restraint as the investigation is finalized.
