President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria's female national basketball team, D'Tigress, for their remarkable victory over Senegal in the semifinals of the 2025 FIBA Women's AfroBasket. The team's hard-fought 75-68 win, held in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, not only secured their place in the final for the fifth consecutive time but also qualified them for the 2026 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup qualifying tournaments.
In an official statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu commended the team's "resilience and dominance," highlighting their exceptional discipline, focus, and team spirit. The President also gave a special mention to head coach Rena Wakama, praising her leadership as an inspiration to the entire squad.
The victory over Senegal marks the D'Tigress' seventh consecutive win against their rivals. The semifinal match, often dubbed "the final before the final," saw the Nigerian side stage a strong comeback after trailing in the third quarter. Ezinne Kalu was a standout performer, leading the team with 19 points.
With this win, D'Tigress is now on the brink of making history. They aim to become the first African team to win five consecutive AfroBasket titles when they face Mali in the final—a highly anticipated rematch of the 2021 championship game.
