Nigeria's National Menstrual Health Policy
The Federal Government of Nigeria has validated a new National Policy on Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management (MHHM), with the primary goal of ending the social stigma and various challenges associated with menstruation by the year 2030. This policy was officially approved on August 15, 2025, in Abuja, with the support of the Minister of Women Affairs, state commissioners, and civil society groups.
The policy's key objectives include:
Access to Education: Ensuring that no girl has to miss school due to menstruation.
Ending "Period Poverty": The government has implemented a tax waiver on sanitary products as part of a new Tax Reform Act to make these items more affordable, especially for girls in rural areas and internally displaced persons' camps.
Comprehensive Integration: The policy incorporates menstrual health into national plans for health, education, and sanitation.
