The Trump administration and affiliated actors have made sweeping requests to state election officials for access to voter registration rolls and voting equipment inspections as of July 16—moves that officials describe as "unusual".
In Colorado, local clerks were approached to allow third-party inspections of voting machines. Carly Koppes, Weld County’s Republican clerk, firmly refused: “That’s a hard stop for me… nobody gets access to my voting equipment”.
At least nine states have received requests for full voter roll copies—two of which have complied—prompting alarm over data security and political overreach.
Critics warn that these actions may undermine confidence in election systems and violate state authority in overseeing polling infrastructure ahead of the 2025–2026 election cycles.
