China lifts sanctions, resumes legislative exchanges ahead of summit with Brussels.
China has announced it is restoring normal legislative ties with the European Parliament, lifting the remaining restrictions imposed in 2021 over Xinjiang-related disputes. Beijing’s foreign ministry confirmed that all sanctions—including those targeting EU individuals like Reinhard Buetikofer—have been removed as of July 16.
The move comes ahead of a high-level summit later this month in Beijing, expected to bring together Chinese President Xi Jinping and EU leaders Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa. Analysts see this as a strategic step to ease tensions amid ongoing global trade frictions.
European officials have welcomed the reversal, hoping it signals a warming of bilateral relations strained by concerns over human rights and sanctions that targeted both sides reciprocally.
Observers note that renewed cooperation could lead to expanded trade, legislative dialogue, and joint action on economic governance. The upcoming summit may seal new agreements or frameworks for future engagement.
