Kenya's High Court recently ruled that the 2021 rendition of separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu from Nairobi to Nigeria was unconstitutional and violated his rights. The court held that the Kenyan government failed to protect Kanu after his lawful entry into its territory.
Chief Justice E.C. Mwita found that Kenyan authorities colluded in his kidnapping, denying him food, legal representation, and communication during detention—a breach of both national and international human rights.
The ruling challenges INTERPOL’s cooperation and raises diplomatic questions, as it holds Kenya accountable for collaborating with Nigerian security forces in the operation.
The case reinforces issues around political asylum, sovereignty, and rights protections in Nigeria and abroad, setting precedent for future cross-border abductions involving political figures.
