DA Leader Slams ANC Over Cabinet Appointment Delays, Threatening Coalition Stability.
Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen has publicly criticized the African National Congress (ANC) for what he terms "dragging its feet" on cabinet role allocations, asserting that these delays pose a significant threat to national stability.
Speaking at a press conference in Cape Town, Steenhuisen accused President Cyril Ramaphosa and the ANC of sidelining the DA in major decision-making processes, despite the comprehensive power-sharing agreement signed last month that formed the Government of National Unity (GNU). "This is not a partnership—it’s an ambush," Steenhuisen stated, underscoring the growing frustration within his party.
The core of the dispute revolves around several key ministries, including Home Affairs, Trade, and Public Enterprises, where the DA claims it was promised significant influence or direct leadership. Conversely, ANC officials maintain that negotiations are ongoing and that all appointments will ultimately reflect the national interest and the broader composition of the GNU, which includes parties beyond just the ANC and DA.
Political observers are keenly watching the standoff, warning that prolonged tensions could severely damage public trust in the newly formed coalition. The GNU was established with the explicit aim of ending decades of single-party dominance and boosting much-needed economic reform in South Africa.
