Today's celebration would not have been possible without the dedication and determination of ordinary Nigerian citizens who stood firm against military oppression, brutality, and the denial of rights. These citizens were supported by many elites. The June 12th struggle was a pivotal moment, as millions of our countrymen and women took to the streets—from Lagos to Ilorin, Kaduna to Kano, Ibadan to Makurdi, Boi to Jos, Port Harcourt to Enugu. From towns and villages, the cry for democracy and just governance coalesced into what we know as the June 12th movement. This movement ignited our new democratic journey.
We gather here today because many fought, many died, some survived, and many were brutalized, imprisoned, or lost their resources, never to recover. To all of them, we owe a deep debt of gratitude. One of the survivors is today the President of Nigeria, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He is not only deepening our democracy but also growing our economy.
We can only honor them by ensuring that we protect our democracy and strive for development in Nigeria. Democracy without development is empty and destined to fail. Our theme for today is "Consolidating the Gains of Nigeria's Democracy: The Necessity of Enduring Reforms." The ongoing journey of democracy in Nigeria is firmly in the hands of a leader who embodies the principles of democracy and patriotism. As a key figure in Nigeria's struggle for democracy, Bola Tinubu faced challenges and made sacrifices in pursuit of good governance. His efforts have significantly contributed to our transition to democracy, and his commitment to democratic ideals is commendable.
He has embarked on an unprecedented journey to re-engineer Nigeria and set it on the right path. He is addressing challenges related to the economy, nationhood, and the necessary infrastructure for rapid development. He has also introduced vital reforms where needed. In just two years, the impact of these reforms is already visible, with strong indicators showing that Nigeria is on the right track.
Our keynote speaker today is Professor Samu, a scholar of international standing, who will help us explore our theme and discuss the necessity of reforms in a democracy. A panel discussion will follow to further elaborate on the theme and make it relatable.
On this Democracy Day celebration, I urge all of us to rededicate ourselves to the ideas of nation-building and the rule of law. Let us continue to support Mr. President as he leads Nigeria with purpose and determination. Nigeria, we hear thee, our dear native land. Though tribe and tongue may differ, in brotherhood we stand. Let these words guide us as we strive to build a stronger and more beneficial democracy.
