Netherlands Returns 119 Benin Bronzes to Nigeria
On June 19, the Netherlands handed over 119 looted Benin Bronzes—plaques, figurines, regalia, and more—to Nigeria.
Housed in Leiden, these pieces, stolen in 1897, mark the largest single repatriation so far. Oba Ewuare II called it “divine intervention.” The restitution followed
Nigerian requests and global advocacy for cultural restitution.
