Lagos State Government Issues Flood Alert, Urges Calm After Heavy Rainfall
After more than 12 hours of continuous downpour caused flash floods across Lagos, the state government has issued a public appeal for residents to remain calm. Acknowledging the widespread disruption, the government has assured the public that it is taking proactive measures to manage the situation and has mobilized emergency response teams.
Official Advisory and Safety Warnings
Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, addressed the public, acknowledging that the high volume of rainfall has temporarily overwhelmed some major drainage channels, particularly in low-lying and coastal areas. He explained that Lagos's geography makes it susceptible to "tidal lock," where rising water levels in the lagoon prevent stormwater from draining into the sea.
The government has issued the following critical safety warnings:
Avoid Floodwaters: Residents and motorists are strongly advised against wading or driving through flooded areas, as strong currents can sweep away individuals and submerge vehicles.
Protect Children: Parents and guardians are urged to keep children indoors and prevent them from playing or swimming in the floodwaters during the school holidays.
Alertness in Vulnerable Areas: Those living in low-lying areas and near rivers or lagoons should remain on high alert for potential flash floods.
Long-Term Flood Mitigation Efforts
The government reiterated its commitment to long-term flood control. Wahab highlighted the continuous, year-round maintenance and cleaning of drainage channels. He also mentioned that new contracts have been awarded for the concrete-lining of drains to enhance water flow and increase flood resilience. The government also called for public cooperation, warning against the illegal practice of dumping refuse in drains, which is a key contributor to flooding and is a punishable offense.
