Abia State's Electric Bus Program Expands Under Governor Otti
Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has announced a major expansion of the state's electric-powered mass transit program. The Abia State Executive Council has officially approved a plan to double the number of electric buses to be procured from 20 to 40. To support this larger fleet, the number of charging stations will also be doubled, increasing from 10 to 20.
According to Prince Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information, this expansion is a key part of the administration's commitment to modern, eco-friendly transportation. The first batch of 20 buses is scheduled to arrive in November 2025. These will be deployed to the state's two major cities: 12 buses will serve Aba, and 8 will operate in the state capital, Umuahia. The newly approved 20 buses will extend the service to new routes, including the Ohafia–Bende axis, making the program accessible to a wider range of residents.
The mass transit program is part of a larger developmental vision that includes initiatives for youth empowerment and economic growth. The government anticipates that the new transport system will not only improve the daily commute for residents but also stimulate economic activity and create new jobs within the transport sector. Additionally, the commissioner confirmed that the construction of new, state-of-the-art bus terminals in Aba and Umuahia is underway to accommodate the new fleet.
