NDLEA Secures 22-Year Jail Term for Lagos Couple in Drug Case
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced a major legal victory in its campaign against drug trafficking, with a Lagos Federal High Court sentencing a businessman and his wife to a combined prison term of 22 and a half years.
Case Details:
Arrest and Charges: Johnson Uchenna and his wife, Rosemary Uchenna, were initially arrested on June 13, 2025, by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) in the Ojo area of Lagos State. They were then handed over to the NDLEA, which arraigned them on a four-count charge at the Federal High Court in Lagos. The charges included conspiracy, drug dealing, and the unlawful storage of 414.2 kg of cannabis sativa.
Sentencing: Justice Deinde Dipeolu delivered the judgment on August 4, 2025. Rosemary Uchenna was convicted on three counts and received a 17-year prison sentence with no option of a fine. Her husband, Johnson Uchenna, was convicted on one count and sentenced to five years in prison. He also received an additional six-month sentence on another count, with the option of a N1 million fine.
Asset Forfeiture: The court also ordered that N3.4 million, which was recovered from the couple and believed to be proceeds from their criminal activities, be forfeited to the Federal Government.
This conviction is part of a broader, ongoing crackdown by the NDLEA on drug traffickers across Nigeria. In a separate case, a Federal High Court in Kano has also sentenced an Indian national, Neetu Neetu, to five years in prison for importing 11 kilograms of heroin. These judgments underscore the agency's intensified efforts to dismantle drug networks and prosecute offenders.
