Former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, has been detained by EFCC in Abuja
The detention is linked to an investigation into alleged fraudulent cash withdrawals totaling ₦189 billion during his two terms as governor.
The EFCC is investigating "suspicious" and "illegal" cash withdrawals from the Sokoto State Government's account, which allegedly occurred between 2015 and 2023. These withdrawals are believed to be in violation of Nigeria's Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
The former governor, who is also a sitting senator, arrived at the EFCC headquarters on Monday, August 11, 2025, for questioning.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto State has condemned the arrest, characterizing it as a politically motivated effort by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government to intimidate and silence the opposition. The party claims the EFCC is engaging in "selective prosecution" and reviving a "phantom case."
