Fatal Floods in Ebonyi State Claim Eight Lives, Destroy Farmlands
Recent flooding in Ebonyi State has resulted in the deaths of at least eight people and the destruction of over 800 farmlands.

Location: The disaster primarily affected the Enohia Itim community within the Afikpo Local Government Area.
Casualties: Out of the eight confirmed fatalities, three bodies have been recovered, while five people remain missing. Three of the deceased were children.
Impact: The flood has devastated more than 800 farmlands, severely impacting the livelihoods of local farmers. Reports also indicate that over 3,000 households were affected, leading to a displacement crisis.
Cause: The flooding was triggered by severe, heavy rainfall that caused a river to overflow its banks. The incident reportedly occurred on or around August 1, 2025.
Official Response: The Chairman of the Afikpo Local Government Area, Timothy Nwachi, confirmed the tragedy and extended his condolences to the bereaved families. The Ebonyi State government has also deployed an emergency response team from the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to assist with rescue and intervention efforts.
Background: The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) had previously listed Ebonyi as a high-risk flood zone in its 2025 seasonal climate prediction. The Federal Ministry of Environment had also warned that Afikpo was one of the areas in Nigeria likely to experience flooding, urging residents in low-lying areas to relocate and clear drainage systems.
