Borno State Government Begins Distribution of Subsidized Fertilizer and Farm Inputs
On Saturday, August 2, 2025, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum officially launched the distribution of subsidized fertilizer and free farm inputs for the 2025 wet farming season. This initiative is aimed at boosting agricultural production and supporting local farmers across the state.
The program includes the following key measures:
Significant Subsidy: The government has made 75 trucks of fertilizer available to farmers at a 50% discount. The subsidy is specifically targeted to benefit smallholder farmers, women, youth, and internally displaced persons (IDPs) who have returned to their communities.
Targeted Distribution: The fertilizer is being distributed in two distinct forms: a liquid-based "Wet Blend" for areas with higher security risks to prevent misuse for criminal activities, and a granular "Dry Blend" for regions that are more secure and stable.
Strict Security Protocols: Governor Zulum issued a stern warning against the diversion or illegal sale of the subsidized fertilizer. He noted the government's concern that certain components of fertilizer could be used for criminal purposes. To prevent this, all fertilizer supplies will be tracked by batch, source, and destination. Proxy purchases have been banned, and all recipients must be verified. Local community leaders are also responsible for ensuring transparency in the distribution process.
Strategic Objectives: This program aligns with Pillar Two of Borno's 25-Year Development Plan and 10-Year Strategic Transformation Framework. The governor highlighted the initiative's importance in restoring livelihoods, improving soil fertility, increasing crop yields, and enhancing household food security to reduce the state’s dependence on external food sources.
This effort is a key part of the Borno State government's broader strategy to revitalize the agricultural sector and aid citizens in their recovery from the effects of years of insurgency.
