Its location was approximately 1550 km west of the Andreanof Islands, Alaska. Shallow earthquakes like this one are generally considered more dangerous due to the shorter distance seismic waves travel to the surface, potentially leading to stronger ground shaking and increased damage.
Previous Major Quakes on July 20, 2025: This 6.3 magnitude tremor follows an even more powerful series of earthquakes that struck the same region on Sunday, July 20, 2025. These included:
A 7.4 magnitude earthquake which was the strongest of the series, striking approximately 144 km east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at a depth of 20 km.
A 6.7 magnitude earthquake which occurred shortly after the 7.4m quake.
