Warsaw blames Russian-backed destabilization amid migrant influx and cyberattacks.
Poland has deployed an additional 10,000 troops along its eastern border with Belarus amid rising tensions fueled by migration surges and alleged Russian cyberattacks. Defense Minister WÅ‚adysÅ‚aw Kosiniak-Kamysz warned of “unconventional warfare” tactics being used to destabilize NATO's eastern flank.
The Polish government accuses Belarus of orchestrating a migrant crisis as a form of hybrid aggression, allegedly coordinated with Moscow. This week alone, over 1,200 undocumented migrants attempted illegal entry into Poland, more than double the usual number, raising concerns of a deliberate push.
At the same time, Poland’s cybersecurity agency reported a string of attacks on government websites, banking systems, and transportation networks, traced to Russian-linked hackers. The attacks occurred hours after Warsaw confirmed delivery of Western tanks to Ukraine.
NATO has reaffirmed its support for Poland, with Jens Stoltenberg stating that “any deliberate attack on a NATO member will trigger collective defense.” The EU is also convening an emergency meeting to address what it calls “geopolitical provocation.”
