Khartoum loses AU membership as violence between rival generals spirals.
The African Union (AU) has suspended Sudan’s membership following months of escalating civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The decision was made during an emergency summit in Addis Ababa and is aimed at pressuring the warring factions to accept a ceasefire and commit to peace talks.
Fighting, which began in April 2023, has displaced over 4 million people and led to a humanitarian catastrophe. Hospitals have been bombed, aid convoys looted, and foreign diplomats evacuated. Civilians are caught between two power-hungry generals: Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.
The AU has vowed to implement targeted sanctions and push for a UN-led resolution. It’s also calling on international donors to increase humanitarian funding and ensure safe corridors for food and medical aid.
Analysts warn that unless both factions are disarmed and civilian rule restored, Sudan risks complete state failure. The AU is expected to send a peacekeeping delegation to monitor any future ceasefire agreements.
