Tinubu government backs Marvin Sordell’s proposal for Nigeria’s first F1 Grand Prix in Abuja.
Former Premier League star Marvin Sordell, now co-CEO of Opus Race Promotions, presented Nigeria’s bid to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix in Abuja, backed by the federal government. The proposal includes building a world-class circuit, karting track, hotels, tech hub, and motorsport museum.
Discussions have already begun with Shehu Dikko of the National Sports Commission, with F1 and FIA now formally engaged. F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali is expected to visit Abuja to assess the proposal.
The bid aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, aiming to diversify Nigeria’s economy via tourism, infrastructure, and youth engagement. Although Africa currently hosts no F1 events, countries like South Africa and Rwanda had previously explored options.
Critics raise concerns over costs and long-term benefits—but supporters argue the event could offer transformative economic impact and global visibility for Nigeria if successful.
