Nationwide Shutdown Looms as NLC, TUC Give FG 14-Day Deadline Over New Minimum Wage.
Nigeria is on high alert for a potential nationwide industrial action as Organized Labour, led by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), has issued a stark 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government. At a joint press conference held this afternoon in Abuja, the labour unions demanded the immediate conclusion of negotiations and swift implementation of a new national minimum wage, warning of a total shutdown if their demands are not met.
The unions voiced deep frustration over the lengthy negotiation process, which they claim has been stalled by the government's failure to propose a "realistic living wage" that reflects the country's current economic realities. NLC President Joe Ajaero, speaking on behalf of the unions, declared that Nigerian workers have been pushed to the wall by hyperinflation and the rising cost of living, making the current minimum wage unsustainable. The ultimatum insists that a final agreement be reached and a corresponding bill be sent to the National Assembly within the two-week timeframe.
The labour leaders made it clear that failure to comply by the deadline, which expires on Monday, August 11, 2025, will leave them with no alternative but to call for an indefinite nationwide strike. Such an action would paralyze the country, affecting all critical sectors including transportation, banking, government offices, schools, and healthcare services, effectively bringing the nation's economy to a standstill.
In response to the threat, the government has called for continued dialogue and patience, reiterating its commitment to finding a sustainable solution that is fair to workers without crippling the finances of both federal and state governments. However, with the ultimatum now officially issued, the clock is ticking for the government's negotiation team to present an acceptable offer and avert a nationwide crisis that could have severe repercussions for all Nigerians.
