New online registration portal drives spike to 144 political group applications ahead of 2027 elections.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) revealed that a total of 144 associations have submitted applications to register as political parties via its newly launched online portal, established as Nigeria gears up for the 2027 general elections.
INEC National Commissioner Sam Olumekun said the commission is currently vetting submissions that include detailed profiles of each group—such as logos, leadership structures, and acronyms—as part of the approval process.
Analysts comment that the wave of new party registrations may bring greater political diversity but also add complexity to coalition-building and voter decision‑making.
Civil society groups emphasise the need to scrutinise the ideological credibility of these parties, warning that a proliferation of frivolous registrations could confuse voters and dilute political competition.
