U.N. agencies warn funding gaps are exposing 31 million Nigerians to dire food insecurity.
The United Nations, via the World Food Programme regional head Margot van der Velden, today warned that nearly 31 million Nigerians face acute food insecurity—a crisis magnitude equivalent to the entire population of Texas.
With only 21% of the requested $130 million in humanitarian support received, the WFP will be forced in August to suspend aid for 1.3 million people, close 150 nutrition clinics in Borno, and leave 700,000 displaced individuals without assistance.
Experts warn that 300,000 children are now at grave risk of severe malnutrition, and the humanitarian landscape may face destabilising effects across West and Central Africa.
Calls are mounting for urgent donor funding, strengthened government-led interventions, and sustained support to avert a regional food catastrophe.
