BudgIT Reveals ₦6.93 Trillion of Questionable Projects Inserted into 2025 Budget

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi blasted the revelation, calling Nigeria a “crime scene” and urging urgent reforms to stop fiscal recklessness and corruption.
Civic-tech watchdog BudgIT has revealed that the National Assembly inserted 11,122 constituency and constituency-like projects into the 2025 budget, amounting to ₦6.93 trillion—roughly 12.5% of the total ₦54.99 trillion budget—many lacking clear rationale or development alignment . Notable inflations include ₦393 billion on streetlights, ₦114.5 billion on boreholes, and ₦505.8 billion on ICT projects, with the Agriculture Ministry’s capital allocation inflated by **39%** .
Reacting sharply, former Vice Presidential candidate Peter Obi described the findings as symptomatic of deep-seated corruption, stating, “Nigeria must cease to function as a crime scene” and calling for stronger accountability and transparent reforms . He warned that the ₦7 trillion siphoned off dwarfs the combined allocations for Education, Health, Humanitarian Affairs, and Agriculture—totaling ₦6.896 trillion—and demanded reforms to ensure public funds serve real national needs.
