U.S. Soldier Charged with Espionage for Attempting to Aid Russia
A U.S. Army soldier has been arrested and charged with attempting to provide sensitive military information to Russia in exchange for Russian citizenship. The case highlights the ongoing threat of insider espionage within the U.S. military.

The Accused: Taylor Adam Lee, a 22-year-old active-duty service member stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas, and holding a top-secret security clearance, was arrested on August 6, 2025.
The Charges: According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Lee is charged with "attempted transmission of national defense information to a foreign adversary and attempted export of controlled technical data without a license." The charges were filed in federal court in the Western District of Texas.
Providing Information on U.S. Tanks: An FBI investigation alleges that starting in May 2025, Lee sought to provide classified information, including vulnerabilities of the M1A2 Abrams, the U.S. Army's main battle tank, to an individual he believed was a Russian intelligence officer. In June, he allegedly transmitted export-controlled technical data about the tank online.
In-Person Meeting and Hardware: In July, Lee reportedly met with the supposed Russian operative and handed over an SD card containing documents and information about the Abrams tank and other U.S. military operations. Later that month, he allegedly delivered a piece of hardware from an M1A2 Abrams tank to a storage unit in El Paso, messaging his contact, "Mission accomplished."
Motive: Prosecutors allege that Lee offered his assistance to Russia in exchange for Russian citizenship. In an online message, he allegedly wrote, "the USA is not happy with me for trying to expose their weaknesses" and "At this point I'd even volunteer to assist the Russian federation when I'm there in any way."
Official Statements: Brigadier General Sean F. Stinchon of the Army Counterintelligence Command stated, "Soldiers who violate their oath and become insider threats will absolutely be caught and brought to justice, and we will continue to protect Army personnel and safeguard equipment."
