President Bola Tinubu has embarked on a multi-nation official tour, departing from Abuja on Thursday, August 14, 2025. The itinerary includes primary visits to Japan and Brazil, with a brief stopover in Dubai.
Stopover in Dubai: President Tinubu will make a short stop in Dubai before proceeding to his official engagements. The purpose of this stop is not a formal state visit, but rather for logistical reasons and, potentially, informal meetings.
Visit to Japan: The President's first official destination is Japan, where he is scheduled to attend the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) from August 20 to 22 in Yokohama. The conference will focus on economic cooperation, innovation, and private sector investment. During this leg of the tour, Tinubu is expected to hold bilateral meetings with Japanese government officials and engage with key business leaders to attract more foreign direct investment to Nigeria.
Visit to Brazil: Following the conference, President Tinubu will travel to BrasÃlia for a two-day state visit from August 24 to 25. This visit, at the invitation of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, aims to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties between Nigeria and Brazil. The agenda includes bilateral talks on trade, energy, and agriculture, and a forum with Brazilian investors. A key goal is the signing of several new agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs).
The trip has drawn public debate, with some opposition leaders, including Peter Obi, questioning the timing and frequency of the President's foreign trips amidst pressing domestic economic and security challenges.
