Magnitude 6.5 Earthquake Strikes West Papua, Indonesia; No Tsunami Warning Issued
A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck Indonesia's West Papua region. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) confirmed the magnitude, which was revised upward from an earlier estimate of 6.1. The quake's epicenter was approximately 193 kilometers northwest of the town of Abepura, at a depth of 17 kilometers.
Authorities, including the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, quickly issued a statement confirming there was no tsunami threat from the seismic event. So far, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or significant structural damage.
Indonesia is located on the "Pacific Ring of Fire," an area of intense seismic activity where tectonic plates collide, making it prone to frequent earthquakes.
