Magnitude 6.0 Earthquake Strikes Central Sulawesi, Indonesia
A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck central Sulawesi, Indonesia, early on Sunday, August 17, 2025. The shallow quake, with an epicenter located 18 km northwest of Poso Regency, occurred at 5:38 a.m. local time.
The earthquake injured at least 29 people, two of whom are in critical condition. There have been no confirmed deaths reported at this time. The quake caused significant damage to one church, the Elim Church in Masani Village, during a Sunday morning service, with a portion of the building's renovation area collapsing and trapping several people.
Tremors were felt for approximately 15 seconds in Poso Regency, causing panic among residents. Moderate shaking was also felt in the neighboring Sigi Regency. Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported at least 10 aftershocks but confirmed that there is no tsunami potential. Emergency response teams have been deployed to provide medical assistance and assess the full extent of the damage.
