LASU Staff End Strike as Government Agrees to Payment of Arrears
The management of Lagos State University (LASU) has directed all staff to return to work on Monday, August 11, 2025, effectively ending an indefinite strike that began on July 31. The directive comes after the Lagos State Government reached an agreement with the university's staff unions.
Resolution Details:
Strike Cause: The strike, organized by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of academic and non-academic unions, was initiated over unresolved issues concerning staff welfare and salaries.
Government's Offer: Following negotiations, the Lagos State Government made an offer to the unions to address their demands. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, encouraged staff to accept the offer as a necessary step to restore academic activities.
Arrears Payment Plan: A core component of the agreement is the government's approval to pay 12 months' worth of arrears out of the 23 months requested by the unions. The payment schedule is as follows:
The state government will pay nine months of arrears in three installments from August to October 2025.
The university management will pay the remaining three months from November 2025 to January 2026.
Resumption Directive: In a letter to the university community, the Vice-Chancellor emphasized the importance of resuming work for the future of the students and the university's reputation. The management has instructed all staff to resume their duties peacefully on Monday.
