Indian Army Officer Accused of Assaulting SpiceJet Staff at Srinagar Airport
A senior Indian Army officer, identified as Lieutenant Colonel Ritesh Kumar Singh, has been accused of assaulting four SpiceJet employees at Srinagar Airport on July 26, 2025. The incident stemmed from a dispute over excess cabin baggage.
According to a statement from SpiceJet, Lt. Col. Singh, who is posted at the High Altitude Warfare School in Gulmarg, was traveling to Delhi with 16 kg of cabin baggage, exceeding the 7 kg limit. When asked to pay for the extra weight, he allegedly became aggressive and refused. The airline claims he then "grievously assaulted" four members of the ground staff, using punches, kicks, and a queue stand. SpiceJet reported that one employee suffered a spinal fracture and another sustained serious jaw injuries, with one staffer allegedly being kicked after losing consciousness.
The incident was reportedly caught on CCTV, and a police case has been filed against the officer. SpiceJet has also notified the aviation ministry about the "murderous assault" and is in the process of adding the officer to the no-fly list.
The Indian Army has acknowledged the incident, stating it is cooperating with the investigation and is committed to maintaining high standards of discipline. The Army's unofficial account, based on sources, suggests the officer was on emergency leave with only one bag and was "mistreated" by airline staff, which caused him to miss his flight. The officer has also reportedly filed his own police report.
