India has officially welcomed the upcoming summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, scheduled for August 15 in Alaska. The meeting's primary objective is to negotiate a peace deal to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
In a statement released on Saturday, India's Ministry of External Affairs said the summit "holds the promise of bringing to an end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and opening up the prospects for peace." This position is consistent with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's repeated assertion that "this is not an era of war." The Indian government has formally endorsed the meeting and stated its readiness to support these peace efforts.
This endorsement comes at a complex time for India-U.S. relations. The U.S. recently imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports, raising the total duty to 50%, and accused India of indirectly supporting Russia's "war machine" by continuing to purchase Russian oil. Despite this pressure, India has maintained its policy of "strategic autonomy," defending its right to trade with Russia to secure its energy needs. A peace deal in Ukraine could be beneficial for India, as it would likely alleviate the pressure from the U.S. regarding its Russian oil imports.
