Global Survey Reveals Majority Support for Halting Arms Sales to Israel
A new survey, released on August 7, 2025, by the Progressive International organization, indicates that a majority of people in five nations across three continents believe that arms companies should stop or reduce their sales to Israel. The findings, based on polls conducted in Brazil, Colombia, Greece, South Africa, and Spain, reflect growing international concern over Israel's military operations in Gaza.
Key Findings from the Survey:
High Support for a Complete Halt: A significant majority in Spain (58%) and Greece (57%) supported a complete cessation of weapons sales to Israel. Colombia also showed strong support, with 52% of respondents advocating for a full halt.
Support for Reduction in Sales: In countries where the call for a complete halt was not a clear majority, there was still notable support for a reduction in sales. In Brazil, 37% of respondents wanted to completely stop sales, while 22% favored a reduction. Similarly, in South Africa, 46% supported a full halt and 20% supported a reduction.
Widespread Opposition to Military Actions: The survey also measured public opinion on Israel's military actions in Gaza. Opposition was highest in Greece and Spain, where 61% and 60% of respondents, respectively, opposed the actions.
Public Calls for Government Action: The poll also highlighted public pressure on governments to act. In Spain, 41% of respondents said they would "strongly" support a state decision to reduce trade in weapons, fuel, and other goods to pressure Israel.
David Adler, co-general coordinator of Progressive International, emphasized the significance of the results, stating that the survey shows "the message from the peoples of the world is loud and clear: They want action to end the assault on Gaza—not just words." He added that "majorities are calling for their governments to halt arms sales and restrain Israel's occupation."
This new poll reinforces previous findings from other countries, such as the United Kingdom and Germany, where surveys have also shown majority support for suspending or halting arms exports to Israel.
