Four Workers Killed in Japan Manhole Tragedy
Four workers died in Gyōda, Saitama Prefecture, Japan, on Saturday, August 2, 2025, after falling into a manhole filled with a high concentration of hydrogen sulfide gas. The men, all in their 50s, were part of a team of ten inspecting a sewage pipe.
The tragedy began when one worker fell into the manhole, which was about 60 centimeters in diameter and 10-12 meters deep. The other three men fell in while attempting to rescue him. All four were later pulled from the manhole and pronounced dead at a hospital. Authorities are investigating if the toxic gas was the cause of death.
The sewage pipe inspection was part of a nationwide survey ordered by the central government. This survey was initiated following a major sinkhole in Yashio, Saitama Prefecture, in January, which was caused by a corroded sewer pipe. That incident resulted in a truck being swallowed, and the driver's body was not recovered until May.
