Trump's "Big Beautiful Bill" Clears Senate After Marathon Vote
U.S. Senate Republicans have successfully passed President Donald Trump’s landmark legislation, widely dubbed the “Big Beautiful Bill,” following an arduous overnight amendment marathon. The comprehensive bill, which encompasses sweeping changes to immigration, tax, and border policy, narrowly cleared the chamber with a 51–49 vote.
The legislative process was marked by intense debate and internal rifts within the Republican Party, particularly over provisions related to healthcare mandates and education funding. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD), not J.D. Vance, worked late into the night to broker compromises and secure the support of reluctant moderates. Vice President J.D. Vance cast the tie-breaking vote, solidifying the bill's passage.
Trump swiftly celebrated the victory with a televised address, hailing it as “a win for the forgotten American.” Democrats, however, condemned the bill, particularly criticizing provisions that limit asylum access, impose new work requirements for Medicaid and food stamp recipients, and cut federal aid to sanctuary cities. The bill also makes permanent the 2017 Trump tax cuts and adds new tax breaks, projected to add trillions to the national debt.
This vote marks a significant legislative victory for Trump, delivering on key campaign promises as he eyes a return to the White House in November’s general election. The bill now heads to the House of Representatives for a final vote.
