Tinubu calls for global governance overhaul at BRICS summit in Rio.
President Bola Tinubu used his platform at the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro to call for a dramatic reevaluation of global governance, financial frameworks, and healthcare systems. As Nigeria’s delegation leads the African voice, Tinubu emphasized equitable solutions for emerging economies.
He highlighted environmental degradation and healthcare inequality as priority issues, stressing that Africa contributes least to climate change but suffers most from its effects. He said that BRICS must “be architects of a future”—establishing fair access to technology, financing, and sustainable energy.
Tinubu spotlighted Nigeria’s initiatives—like the African Carbon Market Initiative and the Great Green Wall—to show how African-led solutions can contribute to global resilience. He positioned COP‑30 as an opportunity to scale these efforts.
He also urged for accessible credit, debt forgiveness, and health funding to level the playing field for partner nations. Nigeria’s role as BRICS partner country, he argued, carries shared responsibility for inclusive progress.
