Incident Location and Time: Gunshots were initially reported at the Casas del Rio (Gila) student housing complex, located at 420 Redondo Dr NE, in the early morning hours of Friday, July 25, 2025. UNM Police received the first report just before 3:30 a.m. local time.
Victims: Responding officers discovered two individuals with gunshot wounds. One person was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other sustained "non-life-threatening injuries" and is currently hospitalized. Authorities have confirmed that neither the deceased nor the injured individual were UNM students, though they were visiting a student in the dorm. Suspect Status: The suspect, who has not yet been publicly identified, was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals at an apartment building in Los Lunas, approximately a 25-minute drive south of the university, at around 2:30 p.m. Friday, July 25.
