Ghanaian Evangelist Nana Agradaa Sentenced to 15 Years for Fraud
Accra, Ghana – Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, the founder of God's Way International Heaven Church, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison by a circuit court. The conviction stems from charges of charlatanic advertisement and defrauding by false pretense.
The case originated from an "all-night" service held on October 7, 2022, where Agradaa allegedly advertised a "money doubling scam," encouraging congregants to invest money with promises of exponential returns. Following the service, numerous reports emerged from members claiming they did not receive the promised doubled funds.
Police investigations began on October 8, 2022, leading to Agradaa's arrest on October 9, 2022. The case has been ongoing since then, with multiple court appearances. The court's decision to hand down a 15-year sentence concludes this high-profile case. Prior to sentencing, the court had ordered a pregnancy test for Agradaa.
Her legal team has expressed disagreement with the verdict and intends to file an appeal, arguing that the sentence is excessive, particularly given that some charges were acquitted due to lack of evidence.
Evangelist Mama Pat, also known as Agradaa, has been sentenced to 15 years in jail for defrauding by false pretense. The sentencing by an Accra court today follows a lengthy legal battle that began in October 2022.
The case stems from an "all-night" church service organized by Agradaa on October 7, 2022, where she allegedly advertised a money-doubling scheme, promising attendees significant returns on their investments. Following reports from congregants who claimed they did not receive the promised money, the Ghana Police initiated an investigation.
Agradaa was arrested on October 9, 2022, and subsequently arraigned before court on two separate cases related to the alleged money-doubling and sharing schemes. Despite ongoing court proceedings since 2022, the case concluded with her conviction and sentencing.
Her legal team has expressed disagreement with the verdict, particularly regarding the 15-year sentence for an alleged amount of 540 Ghana Cedis, and plans to file an appeal.
Separately, Agradaa has been involved in another ongoing legal dispute with Empress Gifty, who sued her for 20 million Ghana Cedis over alleged defamation and body-shaming. That case is scheduled for another hearing on July 19.
