MTN & Huawei Launch Nigeria’s First 800G Optical Network.
Nigeria’s digital landscape took a leap forward today as MTN, in collaboration with Huawei, launched the country’s first hybrid 400G–800G Automatically Switched Optical Network (ASON) . The upgraded infrastructure promises to deliver unprecedented backhaul speeds up to 800 Gbps, a game‑changer for enterprise and consumer connectivity.
Industry analysts say this launch positions Nigeria as a West African digital leader. While current MTN 5G services deliver around 1 Gbps to consumers, the ASON backbone can support hundreds of times that over fibre, empowering cloud services, data centres, and large-scale digital platforms .
MTN CEO highlighted the upgrade’s role in bridging the internet divide and future‑proofing telecom infrastructure. As businesses increasingly rely on high-bandwidth services—like video conferencing, AI, and data analytics—the network's robustness is crucial.
