Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is under heavy fire after reports surfaced of voter registration data being leaked to third-party platforms. Civil rights groups and opposition leaders are demanding an independent investigation, citing potential election tampering and identity theft.
The leak, which exposed names, phone numbers, and voting locations, has led to nationwide protests. Citizens say the breach undermines trust in the electoral process and opens the door for disinformation campaigns. The IEBC claims the breach was due to a “technical error,” a claim disputed by IT security experts.
Political analysts warn that the issue could escalate tensions in an already polarized political environment. Kenya’s last election in 2022 was marred by allegations of rigging, and the upcoming 2025 polls are considered critical to the country’s democratic future.
