Former President Muhammadu Buhari Laid to Rest in Daura
Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari was laid to rest today, Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State. The solemn ceremony followed Islamic funeral rites and drew a large gathering of dignitaries, family members, and well-wishers.
Buhari, who passed away in a London clinic on Sunday, July 13, at the age of 82 after a prolonged illness, was buried in the compound of his private residence in Daura. His body arrived in Katsina State earlier today, received by President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and other high-ranking officials.
The burial proceedings included funeral prayers led by a prominent Imam, Ustaz Hassan Yusuf, and were attended by President Bola Tinubu, President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau, Niger Republic Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and numerous state governors, ministers, traditional rulers, and political elites.
A military honor guard provided a 21-gun salute in tribute to the late leader's service to the nation. The atmosphere in Daura was one of grief and sober reflection as residents mourned the passing of their esteemed son.
President Tinubu has declared a week of national mourning, with flags ordered to fly at half-mast across the country, in honor of the former president. The National Assembly has also suspended legislative activities until July 22.
Buhari served as Nigeria's military Head of State from 1984 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023. His passing marks the end of an era for Nigeria, leaving behind a complex legacy that has garnered both praise for his anti-corruption efforts and criticism regarding economic challenges and security issues during his tenure.
