FCT Teachers End Strike, Classes Resume Today
After a prolonged strike lasting over three months, teachers in Nigeria's Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have suspended their industrial action and resumed classes today, July 9, 2025. The strike, which began on March 24, 2025, stemmed from persistent issues surrounding unpaid minimum wage arrears and various welfare concerns.
The decision to call off the strike followed a significant intervention by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. Minister Wike played a crucial role in facilitating the release of N16 billion from the six Area Councils' Internally Generated Revenue, specifically earmarked to address the teachers' outstanding entitlements.
On July 8, 2025, teachers began receiving payment notifications that covered their new minimum wage and five months of outstanding salaries. In addition to the immediate payments, a special committee is slated for establishment within the next two weeks. This committee will be tasked with reconciling the full backlog of arrears and proposing a sustainable, long-term funding strategy for teachers' emoluments.
The FCT Wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has urged all primary school teachers in the territory to return to their duties promptly. The union affirmed its commitment to continuing negotiations to ensure the settlement of any remaining entitlements.
