FCT Police Launch Major Operation Against 'One-Chance' Robberies and Criminality
In response to a concerning surge in criminal activities, particularly "one-chance" robberies, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has activated a robust, intelligence-led operational strategy across Abuja. The initiative, which commenced on Monday, July 7, 2025, aims to significantly curb crime and enhance the safety of residents.
The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, stated that the Command will intensify stop-and-search operations at identified flashpoints. These efforts will specifically target suspected "one-chance" operators, vandals, and scavengers, who have been linked to an increase in both petty and violent crimes within the capital. "One-chance" robberies typically involve criminals posing as taxi drivers or fellow passengers to lure and rob unsuspecting commuters.
Adding another layer to their comprehensive approach, the operation will also clamp down on the unauthorized use of diplomatic plate numbers. Adeh warned that individuals employing such plates to commit crimes and evade law enforcement will face severe consequences. Furthermore, residents are cautioned against driving vehicles with covered or missing number plates, or those displaying only a single plate, as these vehicles may be subjected to thorough checks.
The police have also highlighted recent successes in their crime-fighting efforts. Within May and June 2025, the FCT Command reported 49 cases, leading to the arrest of 82 suspects across various offenses, including armed robbery and foiling several kidnapping attempts.
This new operation comes amidst renewed public concerns following tragic incidents, including the recent death of a Ghanaian national, Miss Freda Arnong, who reportedly succumbed to injuries sustained during an alleged "one-chance" attack in Abuja on July 7, 2025. Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has mourned her death and urged security agencies to intensify efforts against these criminal elements.
The FCT Police Command has affirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property, urging residents to cooperate with officers, remain law-abiding, and exercise patience as these crucial security measures are implemented for the safety of all.
