Beijing strengthens global diplomatic role with renewed Middle East mediation.
China has again stepped into the Middle East diplomatic arena by hosting a new round of peace talks between regional rivals Iran and Saudi Arabia. This second phase of negotiations in Beijing builds on the landmark normalization agreement brokered in 2023.
President Xi Jinping has framed China's role as a “peace multiplier,” offering economic cooperation and mutual security as leverage. Both Iranian and Saudi officials expressed optimism after the first two sessions, citing a reduction in proxy conflict and a shared interest in energy stability.
This renewed engagement comes amid escalating tensions in Yemen and Syria, where both nations back opposing factions. Chinese officials emphasized de-escalation and infrastructure development, proposing joint oil security pacts and trade corridors.
Global observers are watching closely as the U.S. maintains a more cautious stance in the region. If the talks succeed, China could redefine its influence in the Middle East as a counterweight to traditional Western mediators.
