APC Dominates Lagos LG Polls Amidst Low Turnout
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a landslide victory in the Lagos State Local Government elections held on Saturday, July 12, 2025. The party swept both chairmanship and councillorship seats across a significant number of the 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), as results continue to be announced by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC).
The ruling party's dominance was evident in early returns and has been confirmed by official pronouncements. For example, Hon. Seyi Jakande, representing the APC, was declared the new Chairman of Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area (LCDA) with a commanding 58,446 votes, leaving opposition parties far behind. The APC also demonstrated strong performance at key polling units, including Oba Elegushi Palace, where it secured 3,655 votes in both chairmanship and councillorship categories.
Despite the APC's overwhelming success, the elections were marked by notably low voter turnout. Less than 5% of the over seven million registered voters reportedly participated, with reasons cited including voter apathy and perceived insignificance of local government elections.
While the elections were largely described as peaceful, some opposition parties and civil society groups have raised concerns. The Accord Party rejected the results, advocating for the abolition of state electoral commissions. The Youth Party alleged irregularities such as ballot stuffing in areas like Lagos Island Local Government and delays in material delivery in Eti Osa Local Government. Additionally, civil society group "Enough is Enough Nigeria" (EiE) had previously questioned the legality of the election date itself.
