Veteran political strategist Akin Osuntokun has sharply criticised Nigeria’s existing party framework, calling it “broken” and riddled with alliances driven solely by power rather than public purpose. He pointed to the symbiotic partnerships among political elites that disregard national interest in favor of personal gain.
Osuntokun highlighted the pervasive lack of ideological clarity within major parties like the APC and PDP. He argued that they operate as power networks, shifting alliances post-election with little regard for outlined policy vision or accountability. This, he says, has further eroded voter trust and fueled public cynicism.
He proposed democratic reform through enhanced party primaries, rigorous internal democracy, and stronger civic education to bolster citizen participation. Strengthening local-level party structures, he added, would cultivate grassroots leaders better equipped to represent genuine public needs.
The political strategist dismissed the notion of outright party bans, instead advocating for reform legislation targeting key party functions: financing, candidate selection, accountability, and transparent operations.
