Nigeria says gunmen kill at least 14 soldiers in clashes in the troubled north
On June 25, 2025, Nigeria’s military confirmed that 14 soldiers were killed and 10 wounded following a clash with more than 300 armed gunmen in Niger State . The violence erupted during a preemptive operation aimed at thwarting an impending attack on villages by heavily armed gangs reportedly based in the Kwanar Dutse Forest.
These gangs, often former pastoralists engaged in long-standing disputes with farmers, have terrorized northern communities across Nigeria. The army reported that their “precision strikes” caused significant casualties among the attackers, though the full extent remains unclear.
