President Tinubu Reacts to Benue Killings, Orders Security Crackdown
In a deeply emotional visit to Makurdi, Benue State, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reacted strongly to the killing of over 150 people in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area. The massacre, allegedly carried out by suspected armed herders, left a trail of destruction, including burnt homes, displaced families, and scores of injured victims now receiving treatment at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital.
Addressing the press after meeting survivors, President Tinubu condemned the attack as “senseless bloodletting” and vowed that such evil would not go unpunished. He directed the Inspector General of Police and the Chief of Defence Staff to deploy forces immediately, apprehend the attackers, and restore peace to the region.
At a stakeholders' meeting held shortly after, he pledged stronger collaboration with local authorities and the formation of a peace and reconciliation committee. However, fresh attacks reported in nearby communities just two days later have left many Nigerians skeptical, demanding not just words — but results.
