There's no plan to make Nigeria a one-party state.
To those who raise concerns that the APC is intent on creating a one-party state, I offer you a personal promise: while your alarm may stem from their panic, it reflects a misunderstanding. At no time in the past, nor in the present, and at no point in the future will I view the idea of a one-party state as beneficial for Nigeria?
I have never advocated for any political party registration with the INC. My dear friends and colleagues, we cannot blame anyone for seeking to escape a sinking ship, even without a life jacket. Look at my political history; I would be the last person to support such a scheme. In 2003, when the then-governing party attempted to eliminate political opposition through plots and manipulation, I was the last progressive governor standing in my region. They boasted about their numbers and falsely claimed they would govern Nigeria for the next century or more. Where are they now?
Yet, I stood alone. My allies were induced into defeat, and my adversaries held all the cards possible, but even with all that, they could not control my destiny or our national destiny because fate is written by a greater power. A greater power did not want Nigeria to become a one-party state back then, and it does not want that now.
The failed effort to create a one-party state set progressive political forces on a path to form the APC. It has brought me before you today. I would not do my political adversaries the favor of repeating the same mistake of political overreach. A one-party state is not in the works, nor should it ever be.
That said, we would be guilty of political malpractice if we closed our doors to those from other parties who now seek to join the APC. I sincerely welcome our party's newest members from Delta and Akwa Ibom, led by Governor SheriferiMorenotor Moeno, and other respected members of the National Assembly. You are all welcome to the progressive fold.
No one should shut the door on political newcomers. Political parties that fear losing members may be better served by examining their internal processes and affairs rather than conjuring up nonexistent threats. I want to say, “Try your best to put your house in order,” nor will I help you do so. It is indeed a pleasure to witness you in such disarray.
