Northern Nigeria Hit by Surge in Rural Violence
In April 2025, widespread violence erupted in Benue and Plateau states—central Nigeria’s troubled heartland—resulting in more than 150 deaths in clashes among herders, farmers, and opportunistic militants. Security officials believe the violence stems from escalating competition over shrinking land and water resources.
President Tinubu, alarmed by the violence, directed security agencies to hunt down perpetrators and restore peace. He visited Makurdi, met local leaders and victims, and demanded accountability from law enforcement—after facing criticism for a delayed response.
Human rights groups and analysts warn that without deeper reform—beyond military action—such conflicts fueled by climate pressures and arms proliferation may persist.
